The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has confirmed that major repair work on the Chicualacuala-Maputo rail line is now complete.

The line has been closed since mid-January. That forced the suspension of freight to and from the Port of Maputo into Zimbabwe and other countries in the region.
On Friday, 1 May 2026, Mozambique Ports and Railways — Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique, or CFM, said repairs were finished, and traffic resumed on 1 May.
Below is CFM’s statement on the reopening:
“The Executive Directorate of CFM-South hereby informs the general public, customers, and stakeholders that, following the successful completion of extensive rehabilitation and restoration works on the railway infrastructure, full operational clearance has been granted for the Limpopo Railway Line along its entire length, effective 01st May 2026.
“Accordingly, rail traffic is hereby fully reinstated for both passenger and freight services, covering the routes from Maputo to Chicualacuala (Zimbabwe and Botswana corridors) and vice versa, as well as from Maputo to Xinavane and vice versa.
This milestone marks the conclusion of a period of service interruption necessitated by severe flooding and inundations that significantly affected the region and compromised the integrity of the railway infrastructure. Through coordinated technical efforts and operational commitment, normal service conditions have been restored.
“We express our sincere appreciation to all customers, partners, and the general public for their understanding, patience, and cooperation throughout the period of disruption.
“CFM-South further extends its gratitude to all entities that contributed, directly and indirectly, to the successful execution of the rehabilitation works, with special recognition to the local authorities, affected communities, ARA-Sul, RBL-Chókwé, Petromoc, and other valued partners whose support was instrumental in achieving this outcome.”
