The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has reaffirmed its commitment to clamp down on drug-related crimes following the sentencing of nine Chinese nationals who pleaded guilty to using cocaine.
In a statement, the NPAZ said it is aware of public concerns surrounding the case and assured the nation that all individuals, regardless of nationality or status, will be held accountable under Zimbabwean law. The authority confirmed that the convicted individuals are currently awaiting deportation.
“The NPAZ is committed to ensuring that all individuals are held accountable for their actions in accordance with the laws of Zimbabwe. We will continue to work tirelessly to combat the scourge of dangerous drugs, as it poses a significant threat to the well-being of our nation,” the statement read.
Looking ahead, the authority announced tougher measures to guarantee more effective prosecutions of drug-related offences. Public prosecutors have been directed to prefer correct charges in such cases and push for harsher penalties that reflect the seriousness of the crimes.
“The stance we are taking is a direct reflection of the direction Zimbabwe has adopted in combating drug abuse,” the NPAZ said, stressing its determination to safeguard communities from the devastating impact of narcotics.
The authority also thanked the public for its vigilance, encouraging continued collaboration in the national fight against drug abuse.
Zimbabwe has in recent years intensified its anti-drug campaigns amid growing concerns over cocaine and other dangerous substances infiltrating communities.
