Gweru- Residents of Gweru have voiced their anger and frustration over the Gweru City Council’s (GCC) proposed 2025 budget, which includes drastic increases in cemetery fees that some say are unjustifiable in the current economic climate.
The proposed changes have ignited a firestorm of concern among the community, sparking heated discussions across social media platforms.
According to the proposed budget, the cost of an adult grave is set to soar to US$200, a staggering rise from US$52. For child and stillborn burials, the local authority plans to increase the fees to US$100, up from US$26. Additionally, the burial of ashes is expected to rise to US$250, compared to US$83.20 currently.
The cost for scattering ashes will also increase significantly, going up to US$200 from US$52.
Residents have taken to social media to express their outrage, with many calling the proposed increases excessive and insensitive. Comments flooded in, highlighting the financial strain many families already face, and questioning the rationale behind such significant fee hikes during challenging economic times.
“This is beyond reasonable! How can the council justify these increases when so many are struggling to make ends meet?” one resident posted, encapsulating the frustration felt by many.
Another user remarked, “It feels like a slap in the face to those who have lost loved ones. Instead of providing support, they are making it harder for families during an already difficult time.”
As the community rallies against the proposed budget, it remains to be seen whether the Gweru City Council will reconsider these hikes or stand firm on their decision. The council is expected to address the concerns raised by residents in the upcoming public meetings, where the budget will be discussed further.
