In a striking manifestation of political dissent, war veterans and local citizens in Chiredzi have openly rejected the ruling party’s “ED 2030” initiative, which seeks to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s presidency beyond the constitutional limit of 2028.
The dismissal of this disputable slogan unfolded during an event organized by Daniel Garwe, the Zanu PF-appointed Minister of Local Government and Public Works, at the Chiredzi Rural District Council office.
Garwe was present to hand over a fire brigade vehicle and bicycles to local councillors, but his attempts to garner support for the “ED 2030” agenda were met with overwhelming silence from most attendees.
Despite his enthusiastic promotion, only a handful of Mnangagwa supporters engaged, leaving Garwe visibly frustrated when he challenged an audience member for his lack of participation in the slogan’s chant.
The “ED 2030” initiative is spearheaded by a faction backing Mnangagwa faction within Zanu PF, However, the proposal faces strong opposition from rival factions, including the G40 group and the faction associated with Deputy President Constantine Chiwenga, showcasing an increasingly fractured political landscape within the ruling party.
Just days prior to the Chiredzi event, a coalition of liberation war veterans called for President Mnangagwa’s resignation during a press conference.
They cited nepotism, corruption, and failure to address the country’s deteriorating economic conditions. Blessed Runesu Geza, a notable veteran, criticized the President for breaking promises made since 2017 and for the escalating challenges facing Zimbabwe.
Citizens are increasingly expressing a desire for accountability and leadership that aligns more closely with their needs, indicating that the political climate in Zimbabwe may be shifting as calls for reform gain momentum.
