Chegutu, Zimbabwe —_ Retired Chief Air Marshal Elson Moyo, a former Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe, was involved in a car accident on Monday afternoon that left him injured but stable. The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on the Chegutu-Pickstone Mine road, approximately 10 kilometers from Chegutu.
According to a police report, the 67-year-old Moyo lost control of his silver Toyota Hilux double cab, registered as AES 3454, while navigating a curve. The vehicle veered off the road, collided with a tree, overturned, and ultimately landed back on its wheels.
Despite not exhibiting visible injuries at the scene, Moyo reported discomfort in his right hip and shoulder, prompting a passerby to rush him to the Chegutu District Hospital for initial evaluation. Following the assessment, Moyo was airlifted to Harare Hospital for further medical treatment, where he is currently in stable condition. His family has been informed of the incident.
The vehicle sustained considerable damage, including a dislodged right front wheel, a broken headlamp, and a dented front fender. After the accident, the wreckage was towed to Moyo’s property at Concession Hill Farm near Chegutu.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with the Chegutu Traffic Department handling the case under report reference number RRB 5841121.
The accident has reignited discussions about the safety of high-ranking military officials in Zimbabwe, following a series of similar incidents involving prominent figures in the armed forces.
Observers are questioning whether adequate safety measures and protocols are in place to protect senior defense personnel. While each incident has its own unique factors, the increasing frequency of these accidents has raised public concerns regarding the overall safety and well-being of the nation’s military leadership.
