Harare, Zimbabwe – The Inaugural Climate and Health Africa Conference kicked off in Harare, bringing together regional leaders to discuss the urgent impacts of climate change on public health.

 Minister of Health and Child Care Hon. Dr. Mombeshora addressed the conference, emphasizing the severe threat climate change poses to humanity.

 “Climate change is the world’s greatest threat to humanity, threatening to reverse decades of progress in improving our people’s health and prosperity,” He stated.

Dr. Mombeshora elaborated on the various challenges that climate change brings, noting the role of extreme weather events in exacerbating public health issues.

“Through extreme weather events, such as droughts, spread of infectious diseases, food insecurity, and displacement, the health of millions is jeopardized,” he added,

His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa also spoke at the conference, highlighting the necessity of reducing carbon footprints as a means of addressing both climate change and public health.

 “The exploration of how to reduce the carbon footprint through mitigation strategies, with the added bonus of co-benefits for public health is critical,” he remarked.

The conference serves as a crucial platform for African leaders to unite in their response to the dual crises of climate change and health. By discussing innovative strategies and collaborative efforts, participants aim to forge a path toward a more resilient and sustainable future for the continent.

As the discussions continue, the focus remains on integrating health considerations into climate action, ensuring that the continent can effectively address the challenges posed by a changing environment while safeguarding the health and well-being of its people.
