South Africa TikTok personality Matthew Lani, known for impersonating a medical doctor, is reportedly taking legal action against the Minister of Police, demanding R2 million in damages. Lani, who gained notoriety for his online content, claims that his 2023 arrest at Helen Joseph Hospital was unlawful and has severely impacted his life.

Lani was detained earlier this year after authorities discovered he was posing as a medical doctor. He asserts that the arrest has left him financially and emotionally devastated.

Currently residing in a shelter and surviving on a monthly R370 Social Relief of Distress grant, Lani contends that the incident resulted in the loss of his home and his primary income source as a content creator.

Despite the controversy surrounding his impersonation, Lani continues to produce content on TikTok.

Recent videos show him claiming to be a senior manager and selling ice cream on the streets, recorded on 10 May. These clips have garnered mixed reactions from South Africans, with many expressing amusement and admiration for his resilience and hustle.

One social media user commented, “He must be awarded a hustler of the year award… From being a medical doctor to selling ice cream!”

Another added, “Omg! He can’t even make it swirl properly. I commend him for the hustle though.”

As Lani prepares his legal case, his story continues to spark debate about identity, perseverance, and the consequences of impersonation in South Africa.
