VHENBE Stars Academy and Matopo FC played out a dramatic 0-0 draw in a Central Region Division 1 clash at Ronnie’s Arena on Sunday, a match defined by missed opportunities and late game chaos.
Despite the lack of goals, the encounter was exciting, peaking in the final minutes when a penalty save and a red card for the visiting coach sent tensions boiling over.
Vhembe Stars started the match with intent, dictating the tempo through crisp passing and clinical crossing.
However, while they dominated possession and carved out numerous openings, their finishing lacked the necessary bite.
The home side frequently found themselves in dangerous positions only to fire wide, leaving the game scoreless at the interval.
The second half saw a shift in momentum.
At the 57th minute, Matopo introduced Mtulisi Maphosa(11)and Alick Lungu(13), a move that successfully plugged gaps and stabilised their midfield.
Vhembe responded in the 60th minute by bringing on Thembalethu Bajila (15), who helped the hosts regain control and resume their offensive pressure.
The match reached a fever pitch in the final minutes when Vhembe was awarded a penalty after a Matopo defender handled the ball in the box.
This decision sparked a chaotic confrontation as the Matopo technical staff swarmed the referee, forcing the police to intervene and restore order.
Once play resumed, Matopo goalkeeper Toni Saunyama became the hero of the hour by saving the spot-kick, though the visitors’ coach was subsequently shown a red card for his role in the earlier protest.
Speaking to Ziyah News Network, Vhembe goalkeepers coach Gilbert Chigwandaza refused to scapegoat his striker for the missed spot kick.
“During the first half, we dominated with power. In the second, Matopo covered their gaps. Regarding the saved penalty, we don’t blame our player, that is simply football. We promise our fans three points in our upcoming home match against Good Morning.”
The Matopo FC Coach Rutherford Matondo said, the pressure his side faced but remained optimistic about the lessons learned.
“It was a tough game, but we managed to hold on for the 0-0 draw despite Vhembe’s dominance. This game revealed our weaknesses, and we expect fireworks in our next outing.”
Vhembe Stars will rue the missed chance to climb the table, while Matopo escapes with a hard earned point following Saunyama’s heroics between the sticks.
