Zimbabwe has experienced a troubling increase in crime rates, with the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) reporting a 4.6 percent rise in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the previous quarter.

The national crime rate now stands at 1,356.6 crimes per 100,000 people, an increase from 1,296.5 in the second quarter.

According to ZIMSTAT’s third quarter report, law enforcement agencies recorded a total of 205,925 offences between July and September 2024, up from 196,796 in the second quarter.

The report indicates that crime in Zimbabwe continues to show an upward trend, registering over a 4 percent increase during this period.

Public safety and state security offences constituted a portion of the crime statistics, with 84,001 offences reported. Intentional homicides also raised alarms, with 350 cases documented. The most frequent crime category was assaults and threats, averaging 171.9 offences per 100,000 people.

The report detailed various other criminal activities, including 34,330 thefts (a rate of 226.2 per 100,000), 1,398 unlawful acts involving controlled substances (9.2 per 100,000), and 2,566 fraud cases (16.9 per 100,000). Corruption appeared as a lesser prevalent crime, with only 64 cases reported, translating to 0.4 per 100,000 people.

ZIMSTAT noted that offences relating to public order and authority also saw an increase, with 4,555 recorded, leading to a crime rate of 30 per 100,000.

Traffic violations were particularly prevalent, with 83,732 non-injurious incidents recorded, resulting in a rate of 551.6 per 100,000 population.

The data further revealed concerning trends in sexual violence, with 3,243 cases logged, reflecting a crime rate of 21.4 per 100,000 people.

This overall rise in various categories of crime highlights the urgent need for effective strategies to address escalating criminal activities in Zimbabwe.
