Harare –  As the the Government of Zimbabwe continues with massive infrastructure developments, the Harare – Nyamapanda road is the latest recipient of a face-lift and major improvements after the Government signed Public Private Partnership  PPP  concession agreement that is set to modernist the road and spruce up the border post.

The agreement was signed with Hena Concessions Company to upgrade, operate, and maintain the Harare-Nyamapanda Road and Nyamapanda Border Post. The project includes dualisation of key sections, a modern toll plaza, and enhanced border facilities to ease congestion and boost trade.

In a statement, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development announced the deal with construction expected to take up to three years.

“The Government of Zimbabwe, represented by the Permanent Secretary for Transport and Infrastructural Development, Eng. Joy Pedzisai Makumbe, has signed a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) concession agreement with Hena Concessions Company for the upgrade, operation, and maintenance of the Harare-Nyamapanda Road and Nyamapanda Border Post.”

“This transformative project will include the dualisation of some key sections to ease traffic congestion. the construction of a modern, state-of-the-art toll plaza to enhance revenue collection and user experience, and the upgrading of the Nyamapanda Border Post to improve regional trade efficiency.”

According to Eng Makumbe, the partnership underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging private-sector investment for critical infrastructure development, ensuring safer, more efficient travel and bolstering economic ties with neighboring countries.

He emphasised that the project aligns with the National Development Strategy (NDS1) and will create jobs, stimulate local enterprise, and improve regional connectivity. Hena Concession Company brings extensive expertise in infrastructure development.

Construction timelines and further details will be communicated later on with the Ministry appreciating the public’s cooperation as it works towards enhancing the country’s road infrastructure.

In November 2024, the government had already given insight into the planned project announcing that the agreement has the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) holding equity in the project and facilitate the flow of funds between the various stakeholders. The Harare-Nyamapanda Construction SPV, based in Zimbabwe, will be responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the road and border post infrastructure.
