 The University of Zimbabwe proudly unveiled Sophia, the country’s first humanoid robot,a step towards embracing smart technology as a catalyst for national development.

The unveiling event marks a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s journey towards technological advancement as part of the government’s Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to drive efficiency, innovation, and sustainable growth.

Sophia, developed through a collaborative effort between global robotics pioneer Hanson Robotics and a dedicated team of researchers from the University of Zimbabwe specializing in computer science and artificial intelligence, showcases an impressive display of human-like features.

Equipped with advanced artificial intelligence systems and cutting-edge computer vision capabilities, Sophia can engage in natural conversations, mimic human movements, and seamlessly navigate her surroundings.

 The Minister of Youth, Honourable Tino Machakaire, Brought to his X account formerly twitter to expressed his enthusiasm for this technological advancement.

 “The future of Zimbabwe in Artificial Intelligence is very bright, as reflected today on the occasion of the launch of Zimbabwe’s first humanoid robot at the University of Zimbabwe,” Machakaire remarked in a post on his X account.

 He shared his excitement about interacting with Sophia, noting, “I had an interesting exchange with Sophia the humanoid robot on a range of contemporary subjects.”

The introduction of Sophia aligns perfectly with the government’s commitment to fostering an environment that supports innovation and technological advancement. As part of Vision 2030, the government aims to transform Zimbabwe into a middle-income economy, and initiatives such as the development of humanoid robots are integral to achieving this vision.

The global push towards smart technology is no longer just a trend; it is a vital component of national growth strategies. By incorporating technologies like Sophia, Zimbabwe is positioning itself as a player in the global technological landscape, potentially opening doors to new opportunities in education, industry, and research.
