Women for Change (WFC), a prominent advocacy group for gender-based violence reform, is calling on South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, to cancel Chris Brown’s upcoming concert scheduled for December 14, 2024, in Johannesburg.

This appeal comes in light of the singer’s long history of domestic violence incidents, including his infamous 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna.

The concert coincides with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a time dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for the rights of abuse survivors.

Activists argue that allowing Brown to perform sends a detrimental message to victims and undermines the ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence in South Africa.

Chris Brown’s history of violence against women has repeatedly garnered media attention and led to severe repercussions in various countries.

He has faced bans in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, highlighting a consistent pattern of behavior that continues to provoke public outcry.

In a statement shared on social media, WFC expressed, “Hosting Chris Brown not only disregards the experiences of countless survivors but also hampers the significant work we are striving to achieve in addressing gender-based violence in South Africa.”

The call to action emphasizes the urgent need to reconsider the implications of allowing individuals with such troubling backgrounds to perform on public stages.
