AS pressure to celebrate Valentine’s Day through romantic relationships continues to grow, young women from ZAOGA Forward in Faith Ministries International gathered at Chikomo Restaurant on Thursday to celebrate Galentine’s Day, focusing on friendship, self-respect and spiritual values.
The celebration organised by the girls, provided an alternative way to observe the day, which is often associated with couples, gifts and romantic expectations.
Hostess Vongai Chimedza said the event was meant to help young women resist societal pressure and make responsible decisions.
“The Galentine’s celebration was very helpful because we were taught many important values, including waiting for God’s timing and avoiding adult activities before the right time,” she said.
“We were also reminded that our bodies are temples and not everyone can enter and exit them, which means we must respect and protect ourselves.”
She said the initiative was important at a time when many young people feel pressured to engage in relationships prematurely.
Participants said the gathering helped them understand that their worth is not defined by having a romantic partner on Valentine’s Day.
“There is a lot of pressure during Valentine’s Day, especially when you see others receiving gifts and going on dates,” said one attendee.
“But this celebration reminded us that we can still be happy and celebrate ourselves while waiting for the right time.”
Another participant Ashely Chaikosa said the event strengthened unity and confidence among the girls.
“We wanted to celebrate ourselves and appreciate the friendships we have built as girls in church,” she said. “We don’t have to wait for someone else to make us feel special.”
Church members said the Galentine’s celebration created a safe environment for the young women to encourage one another and reflect on their personal growth, faith and future.
The event also highlighted a growing trend among young women who are choosing to focus on self-worth, friendship and spiritual development, even as Valentine’s Day pressure continues to influence many youths.
Leaders said such gatherings play an important role in empowering young women to remain confident, disciplined and guided by their values.
Several young women are taken afvantage of on Valentine’s Day and many regret the day set aside to celebrate love during which many have unplanned pregnancies.
