Binga – A man from Binga has been convicted by the Binga Magistrates’ Court for illegally selling expired and unregistered medicines, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has confirmed.

Chandala Mwindie was found guilty after a joint investigation by CID Binga detectives and inspectors from the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) exposed his operations. He was ordered to pay a fine of US$700, with a default sentence of seven months’ imprisonment if he fails to pay by 30 September 2025.

Additionally, Mwindie received a 10-month prison sentence wholly suspended for five years, on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within that period. The court further directed that all expired and unregistered medicines recovered from him be forfeited to the State for destruction.

The case stemmed from a compliance inspection on 22 August 2025 at Mwindie’s surgery, where investigators discovered that he was selling medicines not registered in Zimbabwe and some that had expired. A follow-up search at his residence led to the recovery of additional contraband medicines, which were presented in court as exhibits.

In a statement, the NPAZ stressed that selling expired or unregistered medicines poses a serious risk to public health and will not be tolerated. Authorities reiterated Zimbabwe’s commitment to ensuring that only safe, registered, and effective medicines are accessible to the public.
