A tragic case has come to light in Mutoko, where a 35-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the atrocious act of raping his two biological daughters, aged just 7 and 5.
This distressing incident highlights the urgent need for society to re-evaluate the safety of children, particularly those under 18, in the care of their fathers.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) reported that the man repeatedly abused his daughters during the night or in the early morning, just before they left for school.
The horrific nature of these crimes raises alarm bells about the growing cases of child abuse in our communities.
On March 18, 2024, the situation came to light when a local councillor received an anonymous tip. Acting swiftly, he questioned the young girls, who bravely revealed the truth of their father’s actions, leading to his arrest.
The man was sentenced to 15 years for each of his two counts of rape, amounting to a total of 30 years.
As these cases of kin abuse become increasingly common, it is urgent that law enforcement and policymakers take immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of children. One crucial step would be to guarantee that children, especially those under the age of 18, remain with their mothers whenever possible.
Immediate and proactive steps must be taken to ensure that no child has to endure the trauma of abuse at the hands of a family member.
