The Government has once again failed to deliver timely salaries to civil servants, including teachers, for the second consecutive month.
With Christmas just days away, many public sector workers are now facing severe financial distress as their bank accounts remain empty.Civil servants anticipated receiving their December salaries this week, however, as the holiday season approaches, they are left in a precarious situation.
This unfortunate delay follows a similar occurrence last month, where several government employees received their salary payments late, while the promised U.S. dollar portion of their bonuses did not materialise or some sections got half.
The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) raised alarms on Wednesday, expressing their frustrations through social media platforms. The union depicted a bleak reality for civil servants, accusing the government of neglecting its workforce.
“For the second month in a row, the Zimbabwean government has failed to pay civil servants’ salaries on time,” stated ARTUZ.
“Civil servants are already earning paltry salaries and are battling to make ends meet. The festive season was struck off the calendar of government workers way back. Unfortunately, the late payment of salaries adds a new layer of pain to the exploited government employees. Failing to meet the basics for survival when others are swimming in plenty is torturous,” ARTUZ added.
The union has warned that its members have reached their limit of endurance and are prepared to take action in 2025 if their grievances continue to be ignored.
As the holiday season nears, the plight of civil servants in Zimbabwe underscores a deeper issue of wage stability and government accountability, leaving many questioning the future of public service compensation in the country.
