The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has expressed its surprise and disappointment following FIFA’s decision to impose a six-month ban on Samuel Eto’o, the Federation’s president, due to misconduct during a recent match.

In a press statement, FECAFOOT revealed that Eto’o’s suspension stems from his actions during the Brazil vs Cameroon match on September 11, 2024, which took place while Cameroon’s U20 women’s national team was competing in the World Cup finals in Colombia.

The Federation believes that the ban, which prohibits Eto’o from participating in all matches involving Cameroon’s men’s and women’s national teams, is based on a misinterpretation of his conduct during the game.

“The Cameroon Football Federation is surprised and disappointed by this unfortunate decision, which appears to be based on a misinterpretation of the actions of President Samuel Eto’o. We strongly believe that this decision is misguided and that it will not prevent him from carrying out his duties at the head of FECAFOOT,” the statement read.

Eto’o reportedly exhibited protest behaviour after Cameroon was denied a penalty during the match, which he argued was a significant officiating error that affected the outcome of the game.

Following the match, he addressed the officials, highlighting what he believed were mistakes that altered the results.

This is not the first time Eto’o has faced scrutiny for his behavior. The former Inter Milan and Barcelona striker has previously been accused of threatening players and the Cameroon coach, Marc Brys, as well as assaulting a fan outside a stadium during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

As the Federation navigates this challenging situation, it remains committed to supporting Eto’o and ensuring that he can continue to lead FECAFOOT effectively despite the imposed suspension.
