Lusaka, Zambia — Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has died at the age of 68, the Patriotic Front (PF) announced on Thursday.

Lungu, who served as head of state from 2015 to 2021, was receiving specialized treatment in South Africa when he passed away.

 The PF’s statement on Facebook confirmed his death, stating that Lungu’s daughter and a family lawyer had verified the news.

Lungu’s daughter, Tasila Lungu-Mwansa, a Member of Parliament, released a video saying her father died at 6 a.m. She added that he had been under medical supervision and that his condition was managed with dignity and privacy.

The former president had been planning a political comeback in the upcoming elections scheduled for 2026.

He has had a torrid time since his defeat to incumbent Haikainde Hichilema, facing a lytanny of accusations, charges that his supporters say were targeted to neutralize his political ambitions.
