The 78th World Health Assembly (WHA78) placed traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM) at the heart of the global health conversation, signaling a transformative shift in how health systems worldwide view and utilize traditional practices.

Recognizing their potential to improve health outcomes and promote health equity, delegates committed to integrating traditional medicine through evidence-based research, regulation, and international cooperation.

On May 26, WHA78 approved the groundbreaking WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034, charting a course for innovative health solutions that bridge traditional knowledge and modern science.

“ The strategy emphasizes developing a solid evidence base, establishing safety and quality standards, and fostering the inclusion of traditional practices within national health policies all aimed at making TCIM a recognized component of universal health coverage,” stated WHO

Throughout the Assembly, discussions underscored the importance of respecting indigenous knowledge and safeguarding the rights of indigenous peoples, alongside commitments to environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation.

Member States agreed that mainstreaming traditional medicine offers a pathway to more inclusive and resilient health systems.

Additionally, India’s Ministry of Ayush signed a US$3 million agreement with WHO to standardize traditional medical practices like Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani within international health data systems—marking a significant step toward global recognition and integration.

To foster engagement and awareness, WHO set up “Ask Me” information stands during the Assembly, offering delegates direct access to information on the strategy, data tools, and ongoing projects.

Looking forward, the emphasis on traditional medicine reflects a broader understanding of its role in fostering innovative, inclusive health solutions.

The upcoming WHO Global Traditional Medicine Summit in New Delhi in December 2025 will be a pivotal platform for stakeholders to share progress, foster collaboration, and accelerate the integration of traditional practices into mainstream healthcare systems worldwide.
