A 28-year-old man from Mfelandawonye has appeared before Beitbridge Magistrate Mponisi Kaweni for allegedly beating up his girlfriend during a domestic dispute.

Calvin Sixpents allegedly assaulted Nenyasha Chigayi (41) on Wednesday afternoon when the two had a heated argument at their shared residence near the AFM Church in Mfelandawonye.

Testifying in court, Chigayi said she had been staying with Sixpence for four months but described the relationship as abusive.

“We’ve had several misunderstandings. On Wednesday, he came home in the afternoon and grabbed my handbag by force. It had a Samsung A05 phone and R1,800 inside. That’s when I called the police for help,” she said.

In his defence, Calvin told the court that he suspected his girlfriend of cheating and demanded access to her phone.

“When I got home, I asked for her phone to check messages, but she refused. That’s when I forcefully took the Samsung A05 from her handbag. I didn’t take any money. I returned the bag with R140 and one US dollar still inside,” said Calvin.

Magistrate Kaweni remanded Calvin in custody, with judgment expected on Monday, 28 September 2025.
