The Midlands High Court Circuit has successfully handled 50 murder cases in just one week, representing a major advancement in tackling the province’s serious backlog of criminal cases.

This circuit, which includes court sittings in both Gweru and Gokwe, was established following a request from Prosecutor General Hon. Loyce Matanda-Moyo to the Chief Justice.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe reports that the Midlands Province is facing a serious backlog of over 500 murder cases since the start of the year. This problem is mainly due to violence involving artisanal miners.

In the past week, the Gweru High Court, with three judges, dealt with 34 murder cases. Meanwhile, the Gokwe Court, with two judges, handled 16 cases.

The oldest case heard was from 2016.

In terms of justice delivered, the courts imposed severe sentences to emphasize the sanctity of human life and deter future violence.

The highest penalty handed down was a life sentence in Gweru, alongside two 30-year sentences, two 25-year sentences, and three 20-year sentences distributed across both courts.

These stern measures reflect the judiciary’s resolve to combat the alarming rates of violence in the region.

Prosecutor General Hon. Loyce Matanda-Moyo expressed optimism regarding the circuit’s ability to meet its ambitious targets, attributing the swift progress to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the Chief Justice, the Judiciary, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Law Society of Zimbabwe, as well as witnesses and members of the community.

“The establishment of this special circuit court has been a pivotal move in reducing the backlog of murder cases in the Midlands Province,” Matanda-Moyo stated.

Successfully resolving 50 murder cases in such a short time shows a renewed commitment to justice in the Midlands. This brings hope to the families of victims and the community as a whole.

With ongoing efforts, the Midlands High Court Circuit is set to make great progress in fighting violent crime and restoring trust in the legal system.
