THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is against the illegal possession and movement of explosives, reminding both citizens and foreign nationals that such actions are criminal offences under the country’s laws.

In a press statement on Tuesday, the police said in terms of the Explosives Act, Chapter 10:08, it is illegal for any individual or entity to possess or transport explosives anywhere in Zimbabwe without proper licensing or authorization.

ZRP Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said law applies universally, regardless of the purpose or circumstances.

Nyathi further said, public service vehicles, as well as private and family vehicles, are strictly prohibited from carrying explosives.

The restriction, police said, is meant to safeguard travellers and maintain law and order, amid growing concerns over the misuse of hazardous materials.

Nyathi said the handling of explosives is governed by strict regulations under the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, which outlines how such materials should be manufactured, acquired, stored and transported.

“Only licensed individuals and companies operating under clearly defined legal conditions are permitted to deal with explosives,”Nyathi said.

Police urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities involving the illegal transportation of explosives.

“Reports can be made through the ZRP National Complaints Desk or at any nearest police station, as authorities intensify efforts to curb potential threats.”

The ZRP said enforcement agents will take decisive action against offenders, saying anyone found in illegal possession or transporting explosives without the required documentation will face the full force of the law.

Explosives are highly dangerous substances commonly used in industries such as mining, quarrying and construction for blasting and excavation purposes.

Due to their volatile nature, improper handling or unauthorized access can lead to devastating accidents, loss of life and destruction of property. This has necessitated strict global and local regulations to ensure they are only handled by trained and certified personnel under controlled conditions.

The latest warning by the police comes amid heightened vigilance over public safety, as authorities seek to prevent potential misuse of explosives and ensure compliance with established laws.
