Football competitions on the African continent often christened the African Safari or the African jungle. While the origins of the terms maybe rooted in playing around with the King’s language, in reality it is indeed a jungle.
Dirty tricks and mind games are often a common feature when opposing teams visit the majority of African opponents especially outside the COSAFA region. From long stays at the airport, substandard hotels, noisy neighbourhoods and potato field like training pitches, these are some of the tactics employed by host teams on the continent to frustrate their opponents.
While this kind of frustration methods have become lesser over time with CAF getting stricter, it is still part and parcel of the beautiful game on the continent
That is why the Warriors being hosted by Kenya in neighbouring Uganda could be a blessing as they do not have to contend with a hostile environment that often punctuates visiting teams up north.
As indicated by Warriors coach Michael Nees, everything has so far gone according to plan with no treatment qualms from his team.
“The conditions are extremely good, I am sure this is one of the best training pitches here in Africa, we cannot really complain,” said Nees.
It is refreshing to note the Warriors are not having to contend with some of the harsh realities of football in Africa and can solely focus on matters on the football pitch. Even though two called players have withdrawn from the squad due to injuries, the team is in high spirits if post cards from Uganda are anything to go by. The coming in of veterans in Khama Billiat and Washington Arubi has no doubt boosted the morale of the team coupled with a new permanent voice at the helm, it’s all systems go Warriors.
