A 25-year-old man from Chirundu, identified as Cuthbert Muvonga, has been convicted for smuggling beer from Zambia into Zimbabwe through an unauthorized entry point. He was convicted and sentenced by the Karoi Magistrate Court.

Muvonga was fined USD 200 or faced the alternative of two months’ imprisonment.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), police detectives on patrol near the Chirundu border post received a tip-off regarding Muvonga’s illegal activities.

Responding to the information, law enforcement officials intercepted Muvonga at a service station in Chirundu.

Upon searching him, they discovered he was in possession of a significant quantity of smuggled beer, including four boxes of 4×6 packs of 330ml Heineken beer, six boxes of 4×6 packs of 330ml Windhoek beer, and ten boxes of 4×6 packs of 330ml Castle Lite beer.

Muvonga was unable to provide any documentation proving that the goods had been declared, which led to his arrest and the seizure of the contraband. The smuggled goods were subsequently forfeited to the State.

This conviction highlights ongoing efforts by Zimbabwean authorities to combat smuggling and enforce border regulations.
