The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed on Monday that the national team has returned home after experiencing alleged “inhumane treatment” in Libya before their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, took to social media to share images of the players, revealing that they were stranded at a Libyan airport for over 12 hours, which led Nigeria to withdraw from the match against Libya.

Troost-Ekong expressed their frustration, stating, “12+ hours in an abandoned airport in Libya after our plane was diverted while descending. The Libyan government rescinded our approved landing in Benghazi without reason. They locked the airport gates and left us without phone connection, food, or drink. All to play mind games.”

Victor Osimhen, another prominent player, also voiced his disappointment regarding the unfair treatment his teammates faced.

“I am disappointed by the unfair treatment my brothers and coaches are facing at the Libyan airport last night. Actions like this go against the spirit of sportsmanship. I support our captain’s decision not to play the match unless it is moved to a neutral ground. My brothers and coaches must return home safe, as we are not criminals or prisoners.”He stated,

In response to the incident, the Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) issued a statement indicating that they have contacted both Libyan and Nigerian authorities after learning about the Super Eagles’ distressing situation at the airport.

CAF’s media release noted that the matter has been referred to their Disciplinary Board for investigation, and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated CAF regulations.

Additionally, Libyan captain Faisal Al Badri commented on the situation, stating that Libya has faced similar treatment while in Nigeria. On June 5, 2024, the South African team, Bafana Bafana, also reported a comparable incident where they spent 18 hours at Uyo airport, which was closed when they were scheduled to depart.

The Super Eagles have now returned to Nigeria, hoping for better experiences in their upcoming matches.
